Landscape and Garden Design Inspired by Nature
Welcome to Stone Cottage Designs, a garden and landscape design service that accommodates every project, from postage-stamp gardens to large public lands.
I grew up here, in Smithsburg, MD, and I find my design inspiration in our natural beauty- from our wild mountains to our pastoral valleys! I have a master's degree in landscape architecture from Utah State University and I have a background in garden design, wildlife biology and historic and cultural landscapes. I've worked for the National Park Service in invasive plant management and natural resources, and as a head gardener for the historic Bartholdi Park, a part of the National Botanic Garden in Washington, DC. I now specialize in creating beautiful and lush gardens and landscapes using primarily native plant species. Whether designing small residential gardens, expansive estates, parks, or public lands, my designs enhance the natural beauty of each environment and create spaces to be enjoyed year-round. I also specialize in historic landscape preservation and design, which includes historic research, restoration, recreation or historically inspired garden design.
Let's work together to bring your vision life!

Historic Landscape Design
I have experience researching historic landscapes and gardens and specialize in all aspects of historic landscape architecture from careful restoration to designing historically-inspired landscapes for your period home or property. My skills extend to public parks and properties that require large-scale landscape reconstructions, or historically themed landscape designs and interpretive features.

Native Plants and Wildlife
As a designer with a background in wildlife biology and native plants, my greatest passion is designing landscapes for the benefit of people and wildlife. Every property, from the postage-stamp yard to the grand estate or public park can be both beautiful and support our native wildlife. I love the challenge of applying native plants to traditional and historic landscapes, replacing lawns with meadows, or brining people closer to native in our civic spaces and parks!
